The Geography of Strabo is the only surviving work of its type in Greek literature, and the major source for the history of Greek scholarship on geography and the formative processes of the earth. In addition, this lengthy and complex work contains a vast amount of information on other topics, including the journey of Alexander the Great, cultic history, the history of the eastern Mediterranean in the first century BC, and women's history. Modern knowledge of seminal geographical authors such as Eratosthenes and Hipparchos relies almost totally on Strabo's use of them. This is the first complete English translation in nearly a century, and the first to make use of recent scholarship on the Greek text itself and on the history of geography. The translation is supplemented by a detailed discussion of Strabo's life and his purpose in writing the Geography, as well as the sources that he used.

OK so it is terribly expensive, and it makes zero sense to buy it without the book containing the comments of the translator, which doubles the expense. An older translation without notes is available at 1/100 of the price in Kindle form. At the same time, without extensive notes a reader who is not already an expert will be completely lost all the time. (Wikipedia is helpful but not enough by far in the given case.) The present book with the notes records a really incredible long-term effort on part of the translator, and I am willing to pay for that.Together with the separate volume of comments, the Geography presents an invaluable insight into the extent of the Graeco-Roman world right after the incorporation of Egypt into the empire. It has no surviving equal, and the present translation of it has no equal in modern times. It is written by a critical mind with extensive excursions to mathematics, cosmology, ethnography, and history. The translator identifies ancient and modern localities, explains the very numerous references to other ancient works, provides further historical context, identifies and explains Strabo's errors and intellectual inclinations. I suppose you can spend years poring over the various details, making the expense rather unimportant.The typesetting must contain very few errors as I have not seen any so far. One issue may be the format of the two books, where I do not quite understand the choice of the publisher. The books are in a rather small format, which makes them really thick. This must make them more vulnerable in long-term use, even though I otherwise have no complaints as far as the workmanship goes.
